3/4 cup butter-flavored shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup sour cream + 1/2 cup milk)
3 eggs
2-1/4 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ground cloves
Mix shortening with sugar. Add buttermilk and eggs. Add dry ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees until done and middle is not wet-looking or gooey. Frost with cream cheese frosting and drizzle with caramel glaze.
Caramel Glaze:
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup heavy cream
1 cup powdered sugar
Cake must be completely cool, or the glaze will slide right off. Bring butter, sugar, and salt to boil over med. heat--without stirring. Boil for 2 min. Remove from heat and stir in cream. After is has cooled for a bit, use a mixer to mix in the powdered sugar. Immediately and slowly pour the glaze over the cooled cake. Leave it to set.
